Palkulammedu is a scenic hilltop located near Chelachuvadu (Churuli) in the Idukki district of Kerala, rising to an elevation of about 1,050 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding mist-covered hills, green meadows, and even glimpses of the Periyar River and distant towns like Kanjikuzhy and Chelachuvadu on clear days. The trek to Palkulammedu is a popular activity among nature lovers and adventure seekers, with trails winding through dense forests and grasslands rich in flora and fauna.

The hill is especially captivating during the monsoon and winter seasons when the atmosphere is cool and the landscape lush. Though less commercialized than nearby tourist spots, Palkulammedu provides a tranquil retreat and is ideal for trekking, photography, and birdwatching. Its proximity to Vagamon makes it an accessible yet offbeat destination for travelers exploring the natural beauty of Idukki. The name Palkulammedu originates from a small pond located at the far end of the hill, where water is seen gently flowing. In Malayalam, “Pal” means milk and “Kulam” means pond — hence the name Palkulammedu.

Palkulammedu is also culturally significant, as the locals consider it a sacred place, especially during the annual pilgrimage season when devotees climb the hill to offer prayers. The region’s rich biodiversity includes native medicinal plants, butterflies, and rare bird species, making it a delight for eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts. The cool climate, unspoiled terrain, and absence of heavy crowds create a peaceful atmosphere that appeals to those seeking solitude or a break from busy tourist circuits. With minimal development around the peak, visitors are advised to carry essentials like water and snacks during the trek.
For those planning a longer stay, nearby Vagamon offers accommodations ranging from homestays to resorts, making a rewarding day trip or weekend adventure in Kerala’s high ranges. You might come across wild elephants, so exercise extreme caution during your visit. It’s best to avoid days with low visibility to enjoy clear views and a better overall experience.

Palkulammedu Off Road Trail
Reaching Palkulammedu is through an off-road trail. We recommended a four wheel drive jeep or that for a driving experience. From the main road to the peak, it’s about 7km of winding, hard rock and mud filled road. Some time forest department will close the roads with a gate.
